AUTUMN

Girl, I have lost my God
you and Autumn in the forest
are my fragile gold

in the noble trees, the ropes
of my heart are cut
I am free as light
I whisper
and the grasses bend

jewelled necks to the dark

wealth of the ground,
the home of my life's
roots where the wind unearths

songs to play in my leaves
in my clouds of death

BRENDAN THE NAVIGATOR

The navigator woke
to his dream
on the cold mountain.

The moment of high
light
had given way
to work.

The boat took on
it's own
inevitable shape,

leather stretched
to fit
the frame like a skin.

Now he was ready
to leave
port and friends,

the worth of his craft
tested
by contest with the sea.

It was equal
to all known perils.

SALLY

If your name were Sally,
I could meet
you in an alley
in the dark

what a lark
that would be, Sally
dim roofs
rising
like walls
of Colorado canyons

we might be lost
what
if the search-party never
found us?
what bliss!

What a pity, Sally
that you don't exist.

FRIEND

his revelling
is a city,

an emergency
of light

& movement;

his quiet time
a prairie:

it contains
the moon

& journeys
that have time
to grow

NEW CLOTHES

I wore the clothes of mourning
When my heart knew them;
When my heart knew them,
I wore the clothes of love;

and mourning was often
lost; and love ignored;
but came a night,
a staggered, unlikely night
& you wore its cloak;

it was then that entire
prairies rolled into sight,
and sorrows revisited
were mourned with a good heart
and joys, confined,
were polished and set alight;

and miracle of all,

the clothes that I thought were old,
and came out of doors in,
shed and washed,
and hung on the trees to dry,

were modelled by the morning.
